Mounting of the drilling head
The mounting of the drilling head is an essential element of every drilling machine. The two most common types of mounting are the pneumatic disc for WEEKE and the pneumatic gripper for BIESSE heads. The mounting immobilises the head housing and stabilises it during operation, which ensures the precision and efficiency of drilling. With the right mounting, the drilling head can make accurate holes without the risk of displacement.
The coupling in a drilling head
The coupling transmits the drive from the motor to the head and protects the head against damage resulting from a blocked drive or an impact start-up. In BIESSE head drives we use a ‘fin’-type coupling and a multi-spline coupling. In heads for WEEKE machines, a gear working with a shock-absorbing insert for heavy start-up is used.
Types of mounting and their application
The two main types of mounting – the pneumatic disc for WEEKE and the pneumatic gripper for BIESSE – differ in construction and application. WEEKE discs are ideal for high-precision machines, whereas the BIESSE gripper is more universal and can be used in various working conditions.
